A new monograph of invasive ultrasonographic techniques, this book introduces the reader to the many applications of invasive and interventional sonography. In 15 chapters, the authors provide a synopsis of most currently practiced invasive ultrasound procedures. The purpose of the book is to familiarize the sonographer with the equipment and techniques of invasive ultrasound. The authors' objectives are worthy but they cover so many different techniques that no technique is covered in great detail. For example, in the chapters devoted to transvaginal technique, only minimal reference is given to hysterosonography, a technique of endometrial evaluation that is quickly becoming routine. The book is most useful for the radiologist performing or assisting in the performance of specialized ultrasound procedures. Physicians in training would benefit from reading this book as they observe or learn to perform specialized ultrasound. The authors are all credible authorities on the subject matters they write about. The quality of the illustrations varies between the different chapters and some of the ultrasound images are dark. Overall, the book is well illustrated with excellent combination of images, photographs and use of color Doppler and color images. The book is visually pleasing and well referenced. This book, a synopsis of many procedures, reviews well the equipment, technique and interpretation of invasive and interventional ultrasound. The book reads well and is easy to reference. Few sonographers perform all the procedures presented in this book. The book is most useful as a general reference text for trainees in ultrasound, or for a quick review before embarking upon aprocedure the reader may not perform often. Overall, I would recommend the book to anyone who is asked to assist or perform these procedures.
