This is an atlas of transvaginal color Doppler. Because the "art of effective diagnoses . . . relies on the recognition of visual signs," this atlas fills a great need. This is a second edition that adds 16 new chapters. This book is one in a series of atlases. The purpose of each volume in the series is to "provide a practical aid to diagnoses by illustrating and explaining the wide range of visual signs" needed by physicians. The book is necessary and an important compendium of what is known about a technology still in its infancy. The objectives are met in a most admirable way. The text makes this book more valuable than a picture-only atlas. Though the author does not state his audience, obstetricians/gynecologists in training and in practice and radiologists will find this book useful. The international contributors appear to be knowledgeable and authoritative. The illustrations are first rate, with an appropriate quantity of explanatory descriptive text. The references are current and pertinent. In some chapters the bibliography is extensive. The book is attractive, and the typeface is plain and readable. There is extensive use of color Doppler images, yet the price is a respectable $145.00. The author and contributors describe honestly those conditions in which color Doppler is useful, may be useful, and is not useful. The writing contains a preponderance of simple declarative sentences that renders the text understandable. A chapter describing the physics of ultrasound and Doppler wave shifts would have been useful. Nonetheless, this is a superb book that states and illustrates a great amount of clinically useful information.
