Aimed at technologists and physicians, as well as students, this atlas by doctors in Japan and the US emphasizes morphology and function of cancer cells and analyzes the appearance of cancer cells on the basis of observation by scanning electron microscopy and differential interference contrast microscopy. Because of the progress of fine needle aspiration with organs such as the thyroid, thymus, salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and prostate, chapters new to this edition target these organs with illustrative interpretations. While in the second edition, the lung, breast, and endometrium were described mostly in terms of exfoliative cytology, this edition adds diagnostic information for cytology specimens taken either by needle aspiration or with a scraping device.
